Abstract

St. Cyril of Alexandria is best known for his role in the Christological controversies of the fifth century. In recent decades, scholars have been attending more carefully to his exegetical legacy. Most of Cyril's work takes the form of biblical commentary rather than doctrinal treatise. Indeed, during his long career he wrote commentaries on nearly every book of the Bible. Less attention, however, has been given to Cyril's pastoral work as the Patriarch of Alexandria, perhaps because his commentaries and doctrinal treatises do not reveal much about his daily pastoral duties. Here the Festal Letters are especially helpful. Twenty-nine in all, these letters cover all but three of Cyril's years as a bishop. The first twelve were published in 2009 (Fathers of the Church 118). The present volume completes the set. Festal letters were used in Alexandria primarily to announce the beginning of Lent and the date of Easter. They also served a catechetical purpose, however, allowing the Patriarch an annual opportunity to write pastorally not just about issues facing the entire see, but also about the theological issues of the day. Thus, in these letters we catch a glimpse of Cyril the pastor writing about complex theology in an uncomplicated way. These letters also illuminate other realities of the ancient church in Alexandria, especially the relationship with the Jewish community and the rising influence of asceticism.

Abstract

Cyril Loukaris (1570-1638), Orthodox patriarch of Alexandria and later of Constantinople, is a fascinating and controversial figure. In addition to being a religious authority, the patriarch proved to be a first-rate politician and diplomat, capable of weaving a vast network of relationships. An acute mediator between cultures, he was a prominent intellectual of his time. The volume, the first of its kind in Italy, collects contributions from scholars of different disciplines, which bring out the multiplicity of cultural and geopolitical plans and areas in which the “Protestant” patriarch Loukaris carried out his activity. For the variety of approaches and areas examined, the essays reflect the many-sided nature of this figure, of which an unpublished sermon and related documents from the Moscow State Archives are published.

Abstract

Born by mistake, or connivance, to struggling parents in a small Lancashire cotton town in 1903, an uninspired Darlington inadvertently escaped the obscurity of farming life and rose instead, against all odds, to become within a few short years the world's greatest expert on chromosomes, and one of the most penetrating biological thinkers of the twentieth century. Harman follows Darlington's path from bleak prospects to world fame, showing how, within the most miniscule of worlds, he sought answers to the biggest questions--how species originate, how variation occurs, how Nature, both blind and foreboding, random and insightful, makes her way from deep past to unknown future. But Darlington did not stop there: Chromosomes held within their tiny confines untold, dark truths about man and his culture. This passionate conviction led the once famed Darlington down a path of rebuke, isolation, and finally obscurity. As The Man Who Invented the Chromosome unfolds Darlington's forgotten tale--the Nazi atrocities, the Cold War, the crackpot Lysenko, the molecular revolution, eugenics, Civil Rights, the welfare state, the changing views of man's place in nature, biological determinism--all were interconnected. Just as Darlington's work provoked him to ask questions about the link between biology and culture, his life raises fundamental questions about the link between science and society.

Abstract

What happens when a former liberation movement turned political party loses its dominance but survives because no opposition party is able to succeed it? The trends are established: South Africa's African National Congress (ANC) is in decline. Its hegemony has been weakened, its legitimacy diluted. President Cyril Ramaphosa's appointment suspended the ANC's electoral decline, but it also heightened internal organisational tensions between those who would deepen its corrupt and captured status, and those who would redeem it. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened its fragility, and the state's inability to manage the socio-economic devastation has aggravated prior faultlines. These are the undeniable knowns of South African politics; what will evolve from this is less certain.

In this book, Susan Booyen delves deep into this political terrain and its trajectory for South Africa's future. She covers an expansive range of topics, from contradictory party politics and dissent that is veiled in order to retain electoral following, to populist policy-making and the use of soft law enforcement to ensure that angry citizens do not become further alienated. Booysen's analysis reveals Ramaphosa to be a president who is weak and walking a tightrope between serving the needs of the organisation and those of the nation.

This incisive analysis of ANC power 'as party, as government, as state' will appeal not only to political scientists but to all who take a keen interest in current affairs.

Abstract

"You've probably seen me on TV; America's most controversial forensic science expert. For the past 60 years, I have been speaking out about horrible things that I have seen happen to everyday people: murders, childhood deaths, tragic accidents, and police brutality, to name some. My expertise has also been called upon in death cases with a high media profile including those of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Elvis Presley, JonBenét Ramsey, Laci Peterson, and others. But in addition to offering testimony in and commentary on many fascinating and famous cases, I have also appeared in court as a high-profile defendant, a fact that gave me an insider's look at another side of American justice. And I learned some harsh lessons about ruthlessness and opportunism, not only in my hometown of Pittsburgh, but at the hands of politically partisan officials of the U.S. government. Not many people are willing to go to the mat in a fight with the Feds. The power they have to apply pressure to get a "guilty" plea from a defendant is overwhelming. The public must know that, when individuals dare to stand up to the authorities, whether it's a local DA, a U.S. Attorney, or an agent of the FBI, these people, if sufficiently provoked, with support from their institutions, can and will set out to get you"--
